Visit Buchanan Dam
Buchanan Dam is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the lake and a worthwhile stop when you’re exploring the area by car. The dam helps control water flow for the Highland Lakes system and gives you a great perspective on the size of Buchanan Lake itself. Visitors often stop along the nearby pull-offs to walk around, take photos, and look out across the spillway and surrounding hills.
Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park & Lodge
Canyon of the Eagles sits along the eastern shoreline of Buchanan Lake and is best known for its quiet trails and wide open lake views. The park features several marked hiking routes that wind through native Hill Country terrain, with overlooks that look straight out across the water. It’s also one of the better birding spots in this part of the county, with frequent sightings of hawks, songbirds, and migratory species depending on the season.
Longhorn Cavern State Park
Between Wake and Lake and Lake Buchanan lies Longhorn Cavern State Park, a unique underground cave system shaped by water over millions of years and now explored on guided walking tours. Inside, you’ll follow paved paths and stairways through massive rooms, winding passageways, and dramatic rock formations. Above ground, the park also offers short hiking trails and picnic areas. It’s an easy half-day adventure that pairs perfectly with a lake weekend.
Swim and picnic at Black Rock Park
Black Rock Park is one of the easiest places to enjoy Buchanan Lake without a boat. The park sits right on the shoreline in Burnet and offers open swim areas where you can walk straight into the lake, making it especially nice for families and anyone who prefers wading over deep-water swimming. You’ll find shaded picnic tables, grills, and wide grassy areas for spreading out lunch or setting up camp chairs for the afternoon.
